Kenny Monday has been announced as the head coach of Morgan State wrestling. Morgan State is a HBCU which is looking to revive their wrestling program after a 25 year hiatus.
Morgan State will be competing in division 1 and they will be able to wrestle their first full division 1 season in the 2023-24 year.
If you don’t know who Kenny Monday is already he is one of the greatest American wrestlers of all time. He won the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and took silver at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.
His biggest win however came in the 1989 world finals when he knocked off Soviet legend Arsen Fadzaev who was a 2x Olympic champ and 6x world champion in his own right.
Kenny Monday will be officially introduced as the head coach of Morgan State on August 22nd and he will officially be the head coach starting on August 24th.
Kenny Monday actually has a son in college wrestling right now with Quincy wrestling for Princeton and actually making the NCAA finals this past season. His other soon Kennedy competed for UNC and was a national qualifier as well.
Quincy is in his last year of eligibility and Kennedy decided not to use his so we most likely will not see either of them hit the transfer portal but it is a cool thought.
Anyways this program with the 2.7 million dollar gift they have received from HBCU wrestling should help them climb the ranks fairly quickly especially with a coach like Monday there.
