Dayton Pitzer Dominates In Debut As Pitt Wrestling Defeats Lehigh

spot_img

After coming off of a loss to Maryland last night Pitt had to get back on track with a win here against Lehigh and they did just that in pretty good fashion as well.

Notably we saw Dayton Pitzer out at heavyweight where we would normally see Jake Slinger take the mat. Pitzer looked incredibly impressive in his bout and was a big part in Pitt taking out the #13 ranked Lehigh Mountainhawks.

Dual Recap-

125- Colton Camacho (Pitt) dec Carter Bailey (Leh) 4-2

133- Connor McGonagle (Leh) dec Micky Phillipi (Pitt) 5-3

Pretty surprising loss for Phillipi to be honest. Should look a bit better as the season goes on however.

141- Cole Matthews (Pitt) dec Owen Reinsel (Leh) 8-2

149- Max Brignola (Leh) dec Tyler Badgett (Pitt) 7-6

157- Josh Humphreys (Leh) pin Dazjon Casto (Pitt) (3:48)

Casto has been off to a rough start so far this season losing to Michael North of Maryland last night and now getting pinned by Humphreys tonight. North looked good coming into the match and probably should have been ranked. Getting pinned by Humphreys is what it is at this point.

165- Holden Heller (Pitt) dec Brian Meyer (Leh) 6-0

174- Luca Augustine (Pitt) dec Jake Logan (Leh) 11-6

184- Reece Heller (Pitt) dec Tate Samuelson (Leh) 7-6

197- Nino Bonaccorsi (Pitt) dec Michael Beard (10-4)

Very impressive win from Nino here beating Beard in dominant fashion. This match looked like a toss up coming into the dual but Nino may be looking to solidify himself as a contender for the title once again.

285- Dayton Pitzer MD Nathan Taylor 10-1

Absolute domination by Pitzer here in his debut. Taylor ranked 17th in the country has looking amazing recently even pinning Heindselman of Oklahoma recently. To beat Taylor the way he did could be showing a very bright future for Pitzer. Whether or not he wrestlers the remainder of this season is something that we will just have to wait and see.

Final Score- 22-12 Pitt Wins

Overall Thoughts-

Great win by Pitt here to bounce back from their loss to Maryland last night. Casto and Phillipi should be able to bounce back from tough losses.

Nino and Matthews are taking care of business as expected and it should be interesting to see Matthews vs Alirez at the All Star Classic.

If Pitzer wrestles the rest of this season, based on what we saw tonight he should be able to grab a bid to the NCAA tournament with little to no trouble.

  1. New rules allow freshmen to wrestling on 5 dates and still redshirt. I believe this is plan with Pitzer. He will be big asset against top ACC teams. Curious if they can use 2 dates for him to wrestle in a tournament.
