Rio Olympic Champion Helen Maroulis picked up her 8th world and Olympic medal at the 2022 World Championships finishing in 2nd place. She fell to Japanese phenom Tsugumi Sakurai who at 21 years old just won her second gold medal.

The match was competitive for the most part with Tsugumi forcing most of the action and Maroulis defending the attacks. Tsugumi scored off of Maroulis’ attack and was able to get out to a 3-0 lead.

Sakurai would prove to be too much for Maroulis and she would hold onto the shut out to win her second world title.

Team Scores-

#1- Japan 180 Points

#2- United States 147 Points

#3 China 84 Points

Team USA women’s wrestling still has two wrestlers left to compete in the world finals with Tamyra Mensah-Stock at 68kg, and Amit Elor at 72kg.
