Real Woods In The Portal What Does This Mean?

Stanford grad Real Woods is now in the transfer portal. This may not seem too big to most but he does have 2 years of eligibility left and this is big since a couple of teams could use him and potentially propel themselves to a national title. Woods placed 6th at this years NCAA Championships and a lot of people including myself have him as the likely favorite to win a national title next season.

Teams that could use him-

Of course him transferring is not entirely dependent on the wrestling team but more so the school and things of that nature we will just talk about the wrestling side of things here.

Iowa-

The Hawkeyes are losing 4x All American and National Finalist Jaydin Eierman who was a staple in the program for the last 2 years. Having Real Woods fill in at 141 pounds might as well just be swapping one guy in for another at this point in time.

Penn State-

The Nittany Lions have an absolute powerhouse and maybe already 5 guys that are favorites to win a National Title should things go the way they should (RBY assuming he comes back, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks, Max Dean*, and Greg Kerkvliet) of course for this everything needs to go a certain way which is unlikely.

If they add Real Woods to the team where they just took a big hit losing 2x National Champion Nick Lee this would be very big for them in the team race and most likely dominate their way to another team title. Woods gave Lee in what my opinion was his toughest match of the tournament falling 3-2.

In theory Woods could go to any Big Ten school and get the starting spot but these seem to be the only two with immediate effects on the team race. It is hard to tell what he has planned but it should be interesting and if he happens to head to a smaller team like Evan Wick did last season it could very well help a smaller program.
