The Macaluso Girls: A Wrestling Legacy

In the world of women’s wrestling, the name Macaluso resonates with resilience, skill, and a dedication to excellence that is truly inspiring. Parents Nikki and Heath Macaluso, the Macaluso family has not only carved out a niche for themselves in the wrestling arena but has also etched their names into sporting history, leaving behind a legacy that stands unmatched.

This dynasty starts with Heath Macaluso, a prominent figure in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community. As the owner and head instructor at the Budo Jiu-Jitsu School of Mixed Martial Arts and the Hudson Valley Director for Boy’s and Girl’s Wrestling at USA Wrestling (formerly NYS Director), Heath’s passion for the sport is palpable. Yet, it’s his role as a father and coach that truly defines his legacy. Guiding his four daughters – Shyla, Mia, Sofia, and Jaida – to the pinnacle of success, Heath embodies the mentorship and support that every wrestling dad wants to be.

Shyla, the eldest daughter, was the first to pursue wrestling. She competed in a multitude of sports, Wrestling, Soccer, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with a black belt. She focused more on soccer as she grew older, fielding D1 offers. More recently, she has pursued music, playing guitar and singing at lounges and restaurants. She now runs a jewelry small business, Island Souls Jewelry, and is living in Florida. She spearheaded the charge, and it’s clear she inspired her siblings.

Mia Macaluso, the second of the siblings, has blazed a trail for women’s wrestling in New York City and New York State. She was the first girl in Section IX to win a varsity (boys) tournament. She has a trail of victories that speak volumes about her prowess on the mat. A three-time NCWWC All-American, two-time NCAA Regional placer and a Pennsylvania State Champion wrestling for East Stroudsburg University, Mia’s accolades are as numerous as they are impressive. From representing the United States in the Junior World Championships in Russia to clinching gold at the Pan American Cadet Championships in Spain to 3x Folkstyle National Champ and 3x Fargo All-American, Mia’s journey is a testament to her indomitable spirit and determination. She is a member of Future Business Leaders of America and Study Buddies, an after-school club for students to help teachers in the classroom.

A three-time Fargo All-American, NCWWC All-American, U20 World Silver Medalist and a U23 National Champion, Sofia’s success is a testament to her talent and tenacity. Sofia wrestled a year at East Stroudsburg University and is now signed to West Point RTC. Don’t forget that BJJ black belt-but that’s another conversation. From clinching medals at international championships to making history as the first female to reach the finals at the DI Boys Section IX tournament, Sofia’s achievements are nothing short of extraordinary.

Jaida Macaluso, the youngest of the quartet, has already begun etching her own path to greatness. With podium finishes at prestigious tournaments like the NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational and the Eastern States Classic, Jaida’s potential knows no bounds. A three sport athlete, she wrestles, plays soccer, and plays lacrosse at Minisink Valley HS attended by her three sisters as well. As a member of the American Kintaro World Team of women’s wrestlers in Japan, Jaida had the opportunity to showcase her skills on the international stage, further solidifying her reputation as a rising star in the wrestling world.
