Isaac Trumble Wins Gold At The U23 World Championships, Day 3 Recap

Day 3 of the 2023 U23 World Championships is in the books and Team USA has crowned yet another world champion with Isaac Trumble winning gold at 97kg.

Trumble’s Path:

R16- Trumble over Hibiki Ito (Japan) 14-3

QF- Trumble over Oktay Ciftci (Turkey) 11-0

SF- Trumble over Sergey Sargsyan (Armenia) 11-0

Finals- Trumble over Radu Lefter (Moldova) 12-2

A dominant run from Trumble winning by technical superiority over 3 out of 4 of his opponents. He was the sole gold medalist for Team USA on the day.

Others:

57kg- Cooper Flynn

Flynn lost a very close match in repechage today to Germany’s Niklas Stechele 3-2 and was eliminated from the tournament.

65kg- Brock Hardy

Hardy claimed a 7-4 victory in his first bout of the day against Moldova and advanced to the bronze medal bout. He went down early against Otinashvili and was able to make a great comeback later in the match and won a bronze medal.

70kg- Doug Zapf

Zapf was sitting in the bronze medal match today since he made it to the semifinals, he fell in a 9-2 bout against Heybatov of Azerbaijan and places 5th.

79kg- Dustin Plott

Plott was eliminated from the tournament after losing his opening round bout and his opponent losing the following round. He did not compete today.

Women:

Women’s wrestling began today at the world championships and Team USA has had a solid showing with two wrestlers competing in the finals tomorrow.

Audrey Jiminez (50kg) and Kennedy Blades (76kg) have both advanced to the finals tomorrow and will compete in the latest session for gold.

Alisha Howk (55kg) won her first match but dropped her second to Martynava (AIN) by tech and was eliminated after Martynava’s loss in the semifinals.

Nichole Moore (59kg) won her first bout and lost her second to Rankin of Canada 7-0, Rankin fell in the semifinals eliminating Moore from the world championships.

Katie Lange (68kg) lost her first match to Parfianovich (AIN) 7-1, Parvianovich fell in the semifinals eliminating her from the world championships.
