In the world of collegiate sports, there are pioneers who challenge the status quo and break down barriers. Meet the McCarley twins, Hannah and Brenna, of Razor GWC, who are making history as the first female wrestlers committed to Buffalo State, the first SUNY school to offer women’s wrestling. Their journey into wrestling is a story of passion, determination, and the power of sisterhood.
The Beginnings of Their Wrestling Journey
Hannah and Brenna’s journey into the world of wrestling began in distinct ways. For Brenna, it was a long-cherished desire. She said, “I got into it because I saw Hannah wrestling, and I really wanted to join. But she wouldn’t let me for like two years because that was her sport, and I played softball at the time. Then one day, I went with her to the wrestling room during sign-ups, not expecting to join or anything. The coach convinced me to wrestle, and that’s when it all started. I began wrestling in my sophomore year.”
Hannah, on the other hand, was introduced to wrestling through the influence of her best friend’s older brother. She shared, “I got into wrestling because my best friend’s older brother wrestled, and I tried other sports and didn’t like them. He told me to come up to practice one day, and I did, and I fell in love with wrestling.”
That love for wrestling took them to higher and higher places, as both Brenna and Hannah qualified for the NYS championships, Hannah placing fourth, both Fargo national team members and intersectional champions, Hannah at 114lbs and Brenna at 107lbs. It’s no wonder theyre off to wrestle collegiately.
Making History at Buffalo State
When Buffalo State announced its decision to introduce women’s wrestling under the tutelage of coach Stephen Hart, it was a moment of validation for the McCarley twins. Brenna explained, “We are both very excited to be the very first commits and being able to help grow a team. It feels special considering we’ve been in a male-dominated sport. Being able to help a college team have its women’s team means a lot to us.”
Their commitment to Buffalo State is not just about pursuing their collegiate wrestling dreams. It’s about shattering stereotypes and inspiring others to follow suit. Hannah added, “I hope to become a college All-American and make it to the world team, like Brenna said, and to help grow the sport in Buffalo.”
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Female Wrestlers
For girls aspiring to further their wrestling careers in college, the McCarley twins offer valuable advice. Brenna urged, “Let your talent shine at the next level and explore your potential. Wrestling in college is a big step to help grow and excel.”
Hannah echoed her sentiments, saying, “I would say to them to go where they feel at home, find the coaches who will push you and benefit you. Don’t think you have to go somewhere just because they have a good wrestling team. Don’t be scared to go to a school with fewer wrestlers. Many schools keep coming out with programs, and they all need those first commits, so don’t be scared to be the first!”
In conclusion, the McCarley twins, Hannah and Brenna, are not only pioneers in the world of women’s wrestling but also inspiring role models for future generations of female athletes. Their journey is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and breaking down barriers. As they prepare to make history at Buffalo State, their story serves as a beacon of hope for all young female wrestlers with big dreams and the courage to pursue them.
