Massive upset at the Cornell vs Wisconsin dual meet as #3 Austin Gomez stuns #1 ranked and 3x National Champion Yianni Diakomihalis handing him his second ever collegiate loss.

Coming into this match everyone expected it to be routine domination for Yianni being that last time they wrestled it was a 12-6 decision in his favor. This time things would be different.

The first period of the bout would be scoreless with a few nice flurries all resulting in no points. To start off the second period Gomez would pick bottom and get the escape shortly into the period.

They would end up in a seatbelt, whizzer situation where Gomez would shoot his shot going to the body look and he would not be denied throwing Diakomihalis right to his back to pick up the takedown and a two point near fall.

As the match went on Yianni would get as close as you possibly could to being in on a leg without actually being on a leg if that makes sense. Gomez looked phenomenal with his counter attacks and ability to shut down Yianni’s defense. Gomez would come away with a 9-3 victory over the 3x National Champ and effectively shutting down his chance at the Hodge Trophy.

The only other person to beat Yianni was Jaydin Eierman all the way back in December of 2017 where Eierman locked up a cradle with short time left to pull the massive upset over the freshman.
