One of the least talked about weight classes at the US Open right now. Adam Coon making his return to wrestling is an interesting case. Coon defeated Cohlton Schultz for the world team spot in 2019 and the Olympic team spot in 2021.
Since Coon leaving the sport to pursue his NFL aspirations Schultz has been the guy to make the past two world teams. He defeated Jacob Mitchell in 2021 and Tanner Farmer last year.
The US Open this year will most likely be between Schultz and Coon. The main questions are, how much has Schultz actually progressed since his last match with Coon, and how will Adam Coon look in his return to wrestling which isn’t necessarily something we can take for granted.
Tanner Farmer who was the runner up to Schultz last year is entered in the field so he could for sure be considered a dark horse to potentially knock one of these guys off.
Adam Coon is the only wrestler in the field to have a world medal to their name as he went on a massive run back at the 2018 world championships to pick up silver.
As far as predictions go I would say that Schultz has done enough up till this point where he could definitely straight up defeat Coon and book his ticket back to Final X. However would not surprise anyone if Adam Coon came back and took care of business as nothing happened. My pick will be Cohlton Schultz.
