#12 NC State defeated #16 Northern Iowa 27-12 in the red pool championship match at the Journeymen Collegiate Duals on Tuesday night in New Orleans, Louisiana.
NC State, led by Pat Popolizio, has given the Wolfpack an incredible start to their 2022-2023 dual season after first beating Cal-Poly, then #17 Lehigh, and now #16 Northern Iowa at the Collegiate Duals. A dominating showing at the Collegiate Duals gives the Wolfpack an 8-0 record, and should most definitely propel them into the top-10 rankings throughout the country.
Here is a breakdown for every match that went down in the Red Pool final:
125 – Jarrett Trombley over Kyle Golhoffer, 7-4
NC State’s Jarrett Trombley kicked off the Red Pool final with a 7-4 win over Northern Iowa’s Kyle Golhoffer. Trombley was efficient with his single-leg in the first period, scoring twice with clean finishes that gave him a solid 4-1 lead going into the second. In the second period, Trombley worked up and out pretty easily, and got another takedown after a wild scramble that started by a great shot from Golhoffer. Golhoffer was down 7-2 to start the third, and worked his way to a takedown, but it wasn’t enough to earn him the victory over Trombley. The Wolfpack took the first lead of the dual.
133 – #23 Kai Orine over #9 Kyle Biscoglia, 8-5
NC State’s #23 Kai Orine flipped the switch in a huge way, hitting a nasty gator-roll which resulted in four backpoints and the win at 133-pounds. Panthers’ #9 Kyle Biscoglia was cruising throughout the whole match, being efficient with his single-leg, and had himself a three-point lead with less than 30 seconds to wrestle in the third period. With short time, Biscoglia just shot in to hold onto a pursuing Orine, which put him right in position to be rolled under. Orine hit the gator-roll right away, flipping Biscgolia right to his back for a four-swipe, and held him there as time expired. Orine and the Wolfpack bench was fired up as they extended their lead to 6-0 after two matches.
141 -#6 Ryan Jack over #7 Cael Happel, 6-3
The Wolfpack’s #6 Ryan Jack was tenacious with his offensive attacks in a 6-3 victory over the Panthers’ #7 Cael Happel. Jack was able to open up his offense quickly in the first period, using a lot of misdirection fakes which allowed him to score off a clean sweep-single. Jack ended the first period on top, and was able to ride Happel out to send it into the second period. Jack continued to find openings on his feet in the second and third period, scoring again on Happle with a clean finish. Jack was able to win the match with great pressure on offense, and put the Wolfpack up 9-0 through three matches.
149 – #24 Colin Realbuto over #17 Jackson Arrington, 5-4
After taking out Ohio State’s #3 Sammy Sasso, Northern Iowa’s #24 Colin Realbuto kept it rolling with a 5-4 victory over NC State’s #17 Jackson Arrington. Realbuto worked his way to a win by scoring on a lot of close offensive sequences, which was a match filled with action. Realbuto scored twice off two reattacks, and went into the third period with a 5-3 lead. Arrington was in the match the entire bout, flashing great defense and came really close to scoring a couple times in the third period. Realbuto finished the Collegiate Duals with an incredible showing, and put the Panthers on the board at 149-pounds.
157 – #12 Ed Scott over Derek Holschlag, Fall
NC State’s #12 Ed Scott steamrolled over Northern Iowa’s Derek Holschlag, pinning him just 18 seconds into the bout. Scott wasted no time, blasting in on a single-leg and finished by dumping Holschlag right to his back. Scott stepped right over, and stuck Holschlag to steal the momentum right back to the Wolfpack bench.
165 – #12 Austin Yant over Matty Singleton, 5-2
Panthers’ #12 Austin Yant worked his way to a 5-2 comeback victory over NC State’s Matty Singleton. After being taken down just 30 seconds into the bout, Yant changed the tone of the match in the second period after riding out Singleton for the entire second period. Yant’s constant pressure on top seemed to fatigue Singleton, which allowed Yant to get up and out in the third, and followed his escape with a takedown on the edge of the mat. The takedown put Yant back into his most dominant position, and was able to ride out Singleton again in the third period. Yant’s victory closed NC State’s lead to 15-6 going into 174-pounds.
174 – Alex Faison over Carson Babcock, 3-1
NC State’s Alex Faison defeated Northern Iowa’s Carson Babcock 3-1 at 174-pounds to extend the Wolfpack lead to 18-6 through seven matches. Babcock stepped in for Panthers’ #12 Lance Runyon, who was unable to make the start for Tuesday night’s final. Faison showed the ability to score with short time, taking down Babcock with just seconds remaining in the second period to score the first points of the bout. With a 3-0 lead going into the third period, Faison locked it down to earn the victory.
184 – #3 Parker Keckeisen over #2 Trent Hidlay, Fall
In a rematch of the Cliff Keen Invitational 184-pound final, Panthers #3 Parker Keckeisen pinned Wolfpacks #2 Trent Hidlay with an insane roll-through near-side cradle late in the second period. In the first period, Hidlay darted in right away on a blast-double, and finished strong with a hard mat return on the edge of the mat for a takedown and an early lead. However, Keckeisen worked his way back and tied the match at 2-2 early on in the second period. Late in the second, Keckeisen got in deep on a misdirection single-leg, which forced Hidlay to defend closely on the edge of the mat. Keckeisen’s length allowed him to reach up and lock a near-side cradle, which he then rolled through and flipped Hidlay right to his back for a quick fall.
197 – #9 Isaac Trumble over Noah Glaser, Fall
NC State’s Isaac Trumble seemed to take notes from teammate Ed Scott, as he also got a super quick fall for the Wolfpack, and stole the momentum right back to NC State. Trumble blasted in just seconds into the bout, and worked his way up to trip Glaser right to his back. Trumble then stepped over, and stuck Glaser early in the first period.
285 – #14 Owen Trephan over #11 Tyrell Gordon, 3-1 SV
The final bout of the dual came down to a one-takedown match, as NC State’s #14 Owen Trephan took out Northern Iowa’s #11 Tyrell Gordon 3-1 in sudden victory. Both wrestlers showed unbelievable defense in a super exciting match that could have gone either way. Both Trephan and Gordon scored off escapes in the first and second period, but the low scoring bout did not tell the story of the match. At one point late in the third period, Trephan had Gordon’s leg in the air near the edge of the mat, where Gordon hit a forward roll to get his leg free and keep the match tied. However, Trephan finally scored off a clean single-leg, and finished with a hard mat return to put a staple on NC State’s 27-12 victory.
